Through the Lens of a PaleoScanner: Beatriz Oliveira’s Journey from Intern to Junior Geologist Technician

Through the Lens of a PaleoScanner (TLP) is a behind-the-scenes series spotlighting Eliis team members who shape our talent and culture from all corners of the business.

Meet Beatriz. Beatriz joined Eliis as part of the International Internship Program, spending 18 months developing her skills in seismic interpretation, client training, and geoscience workflows — even stepping up as a PaleoScan™ training mentor early in her journey. Today, she continues that journey as a full-time Junior Geologist Technician, based in Brazil. In this month’s Through the Lens of a PaleoScanner, we sat down with Beatriz to reflect on her internship experience, the moments that shaped her confidence, and what the transition to full-time means to her.

How has your journey evolved since joining the International Internship Program, and what does it mean to you to now continue as a full-time Junior Geologist Technician?

Since joining the International Internship Program, this journey has meant much more to me than just professional development. It represents a turning point where I gained confidence in my abilities and felt truly integrated into the industry. Continuing as a full-time Junior Geologist Technician is very meaningful, as it reflects recognition of my dedication and growth over time. It also gives me a sense of stability and belonging, knowing that I can keep contributing, learning, and evolving within the company. For me, this transition is not just a new role, but an important step in building the career I have been working toward.

What were the most valuable technical or personal skills you developed during your 18-month internship?

The most valuable skills I developed during these 18 months were both technical and personal. On the technical side, I gained solid experience in seismic interpretation, data analysis, and understanding geoscience workflows. On the personal side, I improved my communication skills, especially when interacting with clients, presenting results, and adapting to different project demands. I also became more organised, proactive, and comfortable working in a professional environment. These skills were essential in building my confidence and preparing me for the next step in my career.

“This experience goes beyond technical knowledge alone — it’s about building confidence and communication skills, and preparing yourself for the next steps in your career.”

What were some of the most interesting projects or experiences you worked on during your internship?

Some of the most interesting experiences I had during my internship were the training sessions I had the opportunity to deliver. It started with my first experience as a mentor in one of our customer training sessions, which was a big milestone for me. After that, I had the chance to lead training independently for other universities and companies. In parallel, I was also responsible for interacting with academic partners, presenting software updates and improvements to clients, and contributing to consulting projects. These experiences were especially meaningful because they pushed me out of my comfort zone, strengthened my communication skills, and allowed me to connect technical knowledge with real industry applications.

Can you share a moment during your internship where you felt you made a meaningful contribution to a project or team?

There were many meaningful moments during my internship, but I would like to highlight one in particular. My first training session as a mentor for PPSA, which happened very early in my journey, was especially important to me. It was one of the first times I truly realised how much I had already learned, especially in using PaleoScan™, and how I could share that knowledge with others. Even though it was at the beginning, it had a big impact on my confidence and set the tone for my development throughout the internship.

How would you describe the team culture at Eliis, and how did it support your learning and development during your internship?

I would describe the team culture at Eliis as very collaborative, supportive, and genuinely welcoming. From the beginning, I always felt comfortable asking questions, knowing that both the Brazil team and colleagues from other offices around the world were willing to help at any time. What surprised me the most was not only the team itself, but also how approachable the leadership is. Even people higher up in the company take the time to support you, answer questions, and guide you through tasks. This environment made a huge difference in my learning process and helped me grow with confidence.

What advice would you give to future interns joining the Eliis International Internship Program?

My advice to future interns joining the Eliis International Internship Program would be to stay proactive and have a strong desire to learn. Take every opportunity to ask questions, even if they seem simple, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. The more engaged you are, the more you will grow, both technically and personally. Also, make the most of the collaborative environment, learn from your teammates, and share your ideas. This experience goes beyond technical knowledge alone — it’s about building confidence and communication skills, and preparing yourself for the next steps in your career.

If you could describe Eliis in three words, what would they be?

Innovation, Geoscience, and Insights.

Through the lens of a PaleoScanner, what keeps you inspired to solve problems and build connections every day?

Through the lens of a PaleoScanner, what keeps me inspired every day is the constant challenge of turning complex data into meaningful insights. Working with seismic interpretation is like solving a puzzle, and each project brings a new opportunity to understand the subsurface more clearly. Beyond the technical aspect, what truly motivates me is the connection with people — whether it is collaborating with teammates or supporting clients in finding solutions. Being able to contribute, learn continuously, and see the impact of my work keeps me engaged and excited to grow every day.
