ENHANCING DEEPWATER TURBIDITIC RESERVOIR IDENTIFICATION WITH AI-BASED TECHNIQUES

CASE STUDY: LAGZIRA OFFSHORE MOROCCO LICENSE

This case study outlines how advanced AI-driven seismic interpretation techniques were applied to help Genel Energy address key subsurface uncertainties in the Lagzira offshore licence in southern Morocco. Faced with the challenge of resolving complex deepwater turbiditic systems and improving reservoir prediction beyond what conventional workflows could deliver, Genel partnered with us to deploy machine-learning–based analysis. The result was a clearer understanding of reservoir geometry and distribution, strengthening decision-making in this deepwater exploration setting.

LOCATION

The Lagzira block is a large offshore licence off southern Morocco’s Atlantic coast, around 75 km southwest of Agadir near Sidi Ifni. It lies in 200–1,200 m water depths and hosts a proven petroleum system, confirmed by Genel’s 2014 SM-1 well, which recovered oil from Upper Jurassic reservoirs.

GEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

In the Cretaceous, the area occupied a passive margin shaped by earlier Jurassic rifting. Jurassic deposition was dominated by carbonate platforms with a clear shelf edge and dip-slope geometry, locally disrupted by normal faulting. During the Cretaceous, the Essaouira–Agadir and Tan-Tan siliciclastic deltas supplied large sediment volumes to the basin, feeding widespread turbidite systems. In the north, sediment pathways were diverted by salt structures, while farther offshore extensive basin-floor fans developed. Turbidites from the Tan-Tan system are now exposed on the Canary Islands, uplifted by later volcanic activity.

CONCLUSION

Despite its distal position between two major Cretaceous deltas, Lagzira reveals unexpected turbiditic activity and mass-transport deposits—see the full case study to explore how AI helped unravel these complex deepwater systems.
